Why Do We Give out Candy on Halloween?

As a predominantly Catholic nation, the Philippines has celebrated Halloween differently. The festivities start on October 31 or sometimes October 30, depending on the tradition and celebration continues during two consecutive national holidays in the country: All Saints Day on November 1 and All Souls day on November 2. Candies or Halloween treats have not been a part of the traditional celebrations over the years.

However, Halloween, as celebrated similar to how it is in the United States and other parts of the world just started recently a few years back here in the Philippines, and while the costumes and spooky activities maybe attributed to celebrating Halloween, one of the main highlights especially for the little and big kids alike are the treats or candy. Candies have been deeply ingrained into this season and are now synonymous to Halloween.

While there are many theories on how tricks and treats became a staple in Halloween, one thing is for certain and that it has been a tradition spanning almost 100 years, and the giving of treats instead of tricks is definitely here to stay. And there is no better or handy treat to give out than a properly packed small piece of candy.
